- ~2000 BC to 1800s
Ancient Roots
Master navigators reading ocean swells and star patterns across the Pacific. 29 coral atolls and 5 volcanic islands became home to a vibrant culture built around ocean, community, and nature.
- 1800s to 1945
Colonial & War
European missionaries, then Spanish, German, and Japanese rule. WWII brought U.S. control as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.
- 1946 to 1958
Nuclear Testing
67 nuclear tests including Castle Bravo, 1,000x more powerful than Hiroshima. Entire communities relocated. Radiation contaminated land, water, and food, causing cancers and diseases persisting today.
- 1979 to 1986
Independence & COFA
Independence declared 1979. The Compact of Free Association (1986) let Marshallese live and work in the U.S. without visas, in exchange for continued military access.
- 1986 to Present
Migration to Arkansas
John Moody settled in Springdale in the 1980s, working at Tyson Foods. Today 15,000+ Marshallese call NW Arkansas home, the 'Springdale Atoll.'
